Researchers boost semiconductors with magnetic atoms to create more than 20 new materials

Researchers at UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute have developed a groundbreaking method that integrates up to 50% magnetic atoms—such as cobalt, manganese, or iron—into semiconductor materials, far surpassing the previous ~5% limit. By alternating ultrathin layers of semiconductors with self-organizing layers of magnetic atoms, they produced a collection of over 20 new materials, including doped superconductors and topological insulators, each maintaining its electronic properties while gaining novel magnetic behavior. These hybrid materials open the door to advanced spintronics—electronics leveraging electron spin—promising faster, energy-efficient computing, enhanced data storage, and a pathway toward more practical, higher-temperature quantum computers.
